1875 Shield Nickel. Proof-65+ Cameo (PCGS). CAC. Brilliant and sharply struck with a captivating cameo effect to the mint finish. Q. David Bowers (2006) estimates the mintage of this issue at 1,000 to 1,250 Proofs; the actual total was not included in the Mint Director's annual report, in keeping with the practice of the Mint at that time with regard to Proof minor coinage. Quality varies among the survivors, and few others seen by PCGS or NGC can match this premium quality Gem. A find for the astute collector.
