- K-6, R.4. Somewhat softly struck in the centers with appealing green-golden color. Even though noticeably circulated, the surfaces still present a soft, satiny appearance. Several thin lateral scratches are noted near the center of the obverse which can be used as future pedigree identifiers. Certainly an attractive example of this elusive Colorado Territorial issue.
The 1861 half eagle was struck in what was known as the Jefferson Territory (Colorado) in very limited quantities. Experts estimate the mintage at about 6,920 pieces, but as with other Pioneer gold coins, most saw extensive circulation and many were melted and turned into federal gold coinage. (PCGS 10140)
