Lot Description
64 graded MS-64, 10 higher at PCGS. A condition rarity within the series, 1908-D "no motto" can be found up through the better AU grades, and even shows up on occasion at the lowest mint-state grades. Beyond that, one has very few options to choose from, as this is one of the poorly produced issues with in the series, and it rarely comes with much luster. Completely to the contrary of that general description, the present specimen boasts refreshingly nice, swoopy luster that may not challenge, say, a 1926 for maximum eye-appeal, but will certainly stand upon its own merits. The luster flows effortlessly through the fields, and layers up, onto and over all devices. As always for the date, the Indian's hair is not quite completely struck and lacks absolute definition, within the central obverse, although the reverse demonstrates almost amazing detail, just about unheard-of for the issue. One might surmise that, given the fine velvety texture, this particular specimen fell off of fresher dies than would typical, later strikes with lackluster character.
